The Great Sausage Roll Off Showcases Basil
January 21, 2020
The Great Sausage Roll Off has come around for another year, and this time, fantastic Norfolk Chef Ben Handley is a finalist and will be using our ingredients for a basil mayonnaise and micro basil garnish.
Judged by some award-winning chefs, this competition is not for the faint-hearted and yields a mass audience each year, since its inception in 2013.
The competition brings chefs from around the UK delivering their take on this – as the competition calls it – “overlooked buffet item”. The competition runs in heats and gives each chef the chance to create, roll, bake and present their take on the classic sausage roll. Read more about the competition itself here.
This year, the competition will be judged by some very familiar faces in the food industry. Paul Foster, owner of the Michelin-star restaurant Salt; Simon Rimmer, chef & author and presenter of Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch; Lucy Horobin, Heart Radio presenter and all round foodie; Paul Cunningham, author and 2 Michelin-star chef; and lastly, Russel Bateman, Head Chef at Gordon Ramsey’s Michelin-star Petrus.
Brilliant Norfolk Chef, Ben Handley, has made it through the heats and will now be competing in the finals. The finals will be held at The Red Lion, Barnes in London on Wednesday 5th February.
Ben Handley is the Chef Patron of The Duck Inn and The Hunworth Bell. The Duck Inn secured first place as The Good Food Guide’s Best Local Restaurant in 2017. It was also placed in the 2019 Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs.
Talking of the competition and his dish, Ben Handley said he was “so proud to represent Norfolk and that is why our sausage roll is a celebration of our world class producers”.
He also said he was “delighted to [be] competing in the final of this amazing competition”.
We will be following Ben’s final and wish him the best of luck! We can’t wait to see our herbs and garnishes put into such a fantastic dish. In the meantime, you can try Ben’s sausage roll for yourself at The Duck Inn in Stanhoe.
