The Staff Canteen: Chef of the Year Nominee Michael Sutherland Wants your Vote

The Staff Canteen have launched an online hospitality industry awards, to give some recognition to those that make the hospitality industry great. There’s 6 categories you could be nominated for, and today, we’ve spoken with Michael Sutherland, who has been nominated for Chef of the Year – alongside some huge industry names, such as Tom Aikens, Claire Smyth, Tom Kitchin, Carlo Scotto and Claude Bosi – to name only a few!!

Hi Michael, tell us a little about yourself. Where you work and where your passion for cooking came from.

I’m Michael Sutherland – Head Chef of the Mirabelle Restaurant at The Grand Hotel, Eastbourne. My passion for cooking came from being a school kid and the only real subject I was good at was Food Technology! So, my teacher at the time persuaded me to start college after school, in catering and hospitality, and instantly I fell in love.

What would you describe your cooking style as?

My cooking style is currently modern British with some Nordic influences. I use an abundance of seasonal and great produce from my suppliers, as well as local farmers.

Tell us a little bit about the awards.

These awards are huge! To me, being on a list with Tom Aikens, Tom Kerridge, Paul Ainsworth, Nathan Outlaw and Clare Smyth to name a few is crazy! I have pushed myself so much these last couple of years and to get into the final 6 would be a massive achievement by itself – so fingers crossed!

The way The Staff Canteen awards work, is that there are 6 categories that you can be nominated for; Chef of the Year; KP of the Year; Lockdown Community Hero; One to Watch; Seasonal and Sustainable Dish; and Social Media Influencer. Once you have been nominated, voting will then open. Here, you can get your followers and colleagues on board to vote for you, all up until November 3rd. On the 3rd November, voting will be closed, and the shortlist will be made. There will then be another opportunity to vote for those shortlisted, and the awards ceremony will then be streamed and winners announced on November 18th.
