Dark blooms, bold flavours - Halloween, reimagined.
Halloween doesn’t have to mean cobweb cupcakes and bright orange icing. This year, we’re embracing eerie elegance – moody colours, dramatic florals, and a little kitchen magic.
At Nurtured in Norfolk, we’re celebrating the darker side of nature – from jet-black violas and deep purple pansies to fresh herbs that add an enchanting edge to autumn dishes and cocktails.
Dark Florals for Dramatic Plates
Black and purple edible flowers are your secret weapon this season. They add instant depth and sophistication to any dish – whether you’re plating up a rich chocolate dessert or roasting autumn vegetables.
Try black violas for bold contrast or deep purple pansies for a softer, mysterious touch. Pair them with beetroot, squash, or dark chocolate for a truly seasonal finish.
🪄 Chef’s tip: Layer your garnishes on dark plates for that moody, candlelit look.
Comfort food, but make it seasonal.
Seasonal Recipe: Pumpkin & Sage Gnocchi
Rich, comforting and autumn in every bite. Pumpkin is the star of October, and when paired with fresh sage it makes the ultimate autumnal dish.
Each flower adds natural beauty and a delicate flavour – a far cry from artificial colours and sprinkles.
A hauntingly beautiful cocktail.
The Crimson Corpse Reviver Cocktail
Every good Halloween menu needs a showstopper drink. Try this crimson-toned creation:
Makes 2 servings
Ingredients:
1.5 oz. Sour cherry gin (if you can’t find this, plain gin will do)
1.5 oz. Lillet Rouge 1.5 oz.
Cherry liqueur
1.5 oz. fresh-squeezed lemon juice
A splash of absinthe to coat glass
Garnish: 1/2 tbsp. of cherry syrup for the glass rim + 2 black edible flowers such as violas
Method:
To make the cocktail, first prepare a coupe glass by adding a splash of absinthe and rolling it around to coat the inside of the glass. Discard extra.
Add ice to a cocktail shaker, then add gin, Lillet, liqueur, and lemon juice. Shake until chilled and strain into glass.
Drizzle a small spoonful of cherry syrup along the edge of your glass, and garnish drink with edible flowers.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want a spooky photo, use a little dry ice in your drink – but never use dry ice in a beverage that is meant to be consumed.
