Due to the onion flavour of this edible flower, they are best used for savoury preparations. The edible flowers can be used whole or the petals can be pulled from the head. These edible flowers add an attractive pop of purple if tossed through salads, or used to garnish soups. Furthermore, they can be used to flavour herbal sauces such as pesto. Adding these edible flowers to pesto, as well as butter gives it that strong hint of onion. The flower petals can be added alone to create flavour, or combine with chopped Chive herbs for a stronger taste. The flavour of the Chive flower compliments ingredients including potato, eggs, cream and thyme. Although, often used as a flavouring, they could be used alternatively to decorate cakes, cupcakes or brownies.

Taste: Chive edible flowers have a beautiful light purple colour and are surprisingly crunchy. They have a mild and pleasant onion flavour which is not overpowering, even mild enough to eat raw, unlike an actual onion. Try Thai Chinese Chives if you're looking for a stronger onion flavour.
